Is Lemon Juice Good for Cancer Patients?

Anyone who has conducted even a cursory Internet search for cancer cures will have found dozens of supposed treatments for this deadly disease, many of which are based on simply consuming a specific type of food. The claims around these anti-cancer diets range from the plausible – that eating fruits helps you stay healthier and reduces the risk of cancer – to the outright ridiculous – that something as simple as celery juice can somehow make your tumor disappear. As you might expect, the vast majority of these claims are wishful thinking, even if some of them are based on tenuous clinical evidence. One assertion that has been widely circulated online says that lemons offer a miracle cure for cancer; while this certainly sounds like an outrageous claim, there might be a surprising amount of truth to it. So, is lemon juice good for cancer patients? Keep reading to find out.

Lemon Juice and Cancer Prevention

In an email chain that was sent around in early 2011, an unnamed author claimed that lemons could be used as a cancer treatment that was “10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.” This questionable document went on to state that lemons were a “proven remedy” that could combat everything from fungal infections to clinical depression, though of course no evidence was offered. While most of the people who received this email probably deleted it almost immediately, its impact was significant enough to plant the suggestion: Lemons fight cancer.

Unlike many of the similar claims that exist online as a sort of anti-cancer mythology, the idea that lemon-derived substances can help with cancer is actually pretty sound. Numerous studies have examined the effects of compounds from lemons and other citrus fruits on cancer cells, and the results have been quite promising. One 2017 review published in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology looked at 22 different studies into the effects of citrus-based compounds on cancer cells and found significant evidence to support the idea, even referring to citrus juices and their derivatives as a “potential resource against cancer.”

Just as striking is the fact that there seem to be several compounds in lemons that may eventually prove effective against cancer. One of the most prominent of these is limonin, the substance that gives citrus fruits – and especially lemons – their bitter taste; a lab-based experiment found that limonin partially halted the growth of ovarian cancer cells and even killed off breast cancer cells, though it’s uncertain if these same effects would be replicated in the body. Other potentially beneficial compounds include naringenin, a type of flavonoid, and pectin, a carbohydrate found in the pulp and peels of citrus fruits.

That said, the evidence is still being gathered, and there is far from enough data to make any firm assertions about the power of lemons to fight cancer; there may be some benefits, but the exact nature and extent of those effects have yet to be determined. There is no reason to believe that lemons are any more effective than modern cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, let alone “10,000 times stronger.”

If you or someone you know has cancer and is considering treatment options, an oncologist would be a far better resource than a lemon.

Fighting the Effects of Cancer and Chemo

Patients with cancer will undoubtedly face a wide range of unpleasant symptoms caused by the disease itself and treatments such as chemotherapy. In some cases, these effects can be mitigated through a combination of home remedies, lifestyle changes, and prescription medications; in other instances, it may seem impossible to improve a patient’s condition in a meaningful way.

This fact can leave many patients feeling isolated and hopeless, but there are always steps you can take to fight your cancer and the side effects of chemo on your own. Below are a few recommendations that have helped other patients adapt to their new reality and resist the debilitating conditions that arise while battling cancer.

Give Yourself Time to Rest

Fatigue is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatments, and it can leave you feeling drained of all energy and motivation. Try to clear your schedule immediately after your treatment and on the days that follow to give yourself time to rest and recover.

Maintain a Balanced Diet

Many of the side effects of chemotherapy are known to alter a patient’s appetite or ability to eat solid foods, making it difficult to get enough calories and nutrients on a daily basis. Regardless, it is extremely important for patients to keep their strength up and maintain a healthy body weight during their treatments; failure to do so can result in delays in treatments and a worse prognosis.

Ask for Help When You Need It

It may offend your sense of independence, but seeking assistance at such a difficult time might be more than recommended: It might be necessary. Enlisting family and friends to help clean your house, cook your meals, go grocery shopping, and carry out many of the general tasks you require can free up some much-needed time to recuperate, plus it can relieve stress and enable healthier habits for patients.
