Numerous studies have examined the effects of compounds from lemons and other citrus fruits on cancer cells, and the results have been quite promising. One 2017 review published in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology looked at 22 different studies into the effects of citrus-based compounds on cancer cells and found significant evidence to support the idea, even referring to citrus juices and their derivatives as a “potential resource against cancer.”
Just as striking is the fact that there seem to be several compounds in lemons that may eventually prove effective against cancer. One of the most prominent of these is limonin, the substance that gives citrus fruits – and especially lemons – their bitter taste; a lab-based experiment found that limonin partially halted the growth of ovarian cancer cells and even killed off breast cancer cells, though it’s uncertain if these same effects would be replicated in the body. Other potentially beneficial compounds include naringenin, a type of flavonoid, and pectin, a carbohydrate found in the pulp and peels of citrus fruits.
That said, the evidence is still being gathered, and there is far from enough data to make any firm assertions about the power of lemons to fight cancer; there may be some benefits, but the exact nature and extent of those effects have yet to be determined. There is no reason to believe that lemons are any more effective than modern cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, let alone “10,000 times stronger.”
